Just think of all the things I wouldn't have to do if I hired a maid - cleaning, washing clothes, washing dishes, cooking, etc. Shopping even! Sure I enjoy some of these things, but over all they take up all my spare time, and I cannot do half the things I really want to do.
With young children as well most spare time is spent on domestic duties, the bulk of my time is spent at work 11 - 12 hours a day (including travel) 5 days a week.
I like to spend more time having fun with my wife and kids, more time practicing my guitar, preparing for the next gig, or writing and recording some new music, reading a favourite book, or even watching a bit of tv, or a DVD.
I could do some work in the garden, ride my bike, excerise, get fit.
But how much would it cost to hire a maid? I earn about $25 - 30(Australian) an hour. This is for a base grade professional government position.
What does a maid earn ? Per hour? Say they earn 15 dollars an hour. If they spent 4-5 hours a day working for me I'd have to come up with almost an extra $100 a day. In our already limited budget, this would be impossible. I'd have to work extra hours, or try to get a better paid job, which would probably be more taxing on my time (and sanity), my wife would have to go out and work. She is at home looking after the kids.
It kind of defeats the purpose.
I suppose hiring a maid is not the way to go, really. What do we want to do that for anyway? Is our life so important that we no longer need to do the basic things in life that make us remember who we are, and what life is all about?
Getting the satisfaction of doing a good job tidying up the home, and cooking a nice meal, to sit and spend a few moments with the family really enjoying it, rather than paying some one else to come into our home and do it for us and not really appreciate it.
However, it would be kind of nice, though. To not have to worry about all those things, maybe once in a while.
