Movie reviews: Over Her Dead Body

Created on: August 31, 2008

Over Her Dead Body is a comedy film starring Eva Longoria Parker (from Desperate Housewives) as Kate and Paul Rudd (Phoebe's husband from Friends) as Henry her fianc.

The film starts on the day of Kate and Henrys wedding and Kate is fussing over the preparations, not happy with anything and becomes really annoyed because the giant ice sculpture of an angel she has commissioned has no wings. She demands the man takes it away but as he is reversing the ice angel tips over and hits Kate. Kate suddenly finds that she is now an angel (with no wings!) and must complete a mission to move on, however in Kate's usual fashion she is too busy complaining to listen to what she is supposed to be doing.

Meanwhile Henry is struggling to come to terms with Kate's death so his sister Chloe takes him to see a Psychic called Ashley to try to get Henry to move on. Henry isn't really convinced that it will work and Ashley psychic powers are slightly lacking so Chloe gives her Kate's diary to find out some information so she can make Kate's messages more convincing. Chloe hopes that this will allow Henry to move on and meet someone else.

However Ashley and Henry become attracted to each other and begin dating. All this does not go down well with Kate who sees it as her mission to break them up. Ashley is the only one who can both see and hear Kate leading Kate to terrorise, annoy and generally drive her to distraction leading to hilarious consequences. Will she succeed in splitting up the happy couple?

This is an enjoyable comedy with some real laugh out loud moments. There is one scene when Henry (who is a vet) and his colleagues are struggling with a rather heavy dog to get it onto the table, it's a bit like the dog scene in "There's something about Mary", its silly but it made me laugh. Eva Longoria Parker does well acting the annoying, demanding Kate, to be honest she has been cast in a role very similar to that of Gabrielle in Desperate Housewives. The only thing I found was I couldn't really believe that Henry and Kate would have been a couple, they didn't seem to have much in common but maybe opposites do attract!

It is not the best comedy I have ever seen but it's an enjoyable film if you want to watch something light-hearted and have a little laugh to yourself. The DVD has no special features so I would recommend you do as I did and rent it rather than buy.
