I give reality show America's Next Top Model kudos for helping the young women on the show an opportunity to flourish in the world of modeling. I, however, am unsure what the pros are for the unfortunate ones that did not get picked and most importantly are for us as viewers. While I give those girls all the credit in the world for staying fit, beautiful and posed, my interest usually stops at the commercials on televison, adds in magazines or even their presence in videos. Above that, the day to day of the life of the model isn't all that appealing to me or to anyone else I know for that matter.
Don't get me wrong, I am just as guilty as most people when it comes to watching television. In fact, I myself have watched reality shows such as America's Next Top Model. I, however, wasn't watching it to enrich myself or in hopes of self improvement. Why was I watching you ask? I watched it merely for entertainment. I had an hour time slot to kill, I was bored so I watched it. What I saw was entertaining cat fights, the models warming up to the camera talking about themselves and their housemates, and I saw challenges that the girls competed in. It's what I didn't see what bothered me.
It was fairly to see early on in the episode that reality show America's Next Top Model is a good reality show for those who want to be models and are interested in the biz. For the rest of us who know there is no possible way we are going to be models and have no interest in following the lives of girls who eat, sleep and breath modeling with side of drama, no thanks. Though it has some of the ingredients of a killer reality show, it lacks in the one wow factor. The one wow factor that says, how did they do that or that is unbelievable that he/she can do that.
It goes without saying that shows such as American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance and so on and so forth catch our attention more because these talents seem to be more interesting. You see, America's Next Top Model has some entertaining episodes like when they are in a music video or for arguments sake maybe even shooting a commercial. Unfortunately, one or two episodes cannot compete with shows like American Idol and Dancing with the Star's non stop action. Each week you know that if you tune in you will at least see some show stoppers amongst the okay ones. No offense to the modeling industry, but it would seem that reality shows that have singing, dancing with a little side of drama are more marketable than modeling when it comes to reality shows.
