Everything at the grocery store seems to have doubled in price, practically overnight. Not only are items more expensive, but the package sizes have gotten smaller. Fortunately, I've discovered some money-saving tips that can help us all.
1. Go online and look up the manufacturers of the food and grocery items you use on a regular basis. Often, you will find that they have coupons you can print from home. Also look for the "contact us" tab or link on the website. Use it. Ask them if they have any coupons or samples of their products that they can send you.
2. Look online at the weekly ads for your local grocery chain stores. You can often find many items that are buy one get one free or significanly discounted. Take notes of the sales you find and make a list. If the sales are from multiple grocery stores, then print the ads to take with you. Be sure to shop at a store that will honor competitors ads and coupons. All you have to do is show the ads at checkout. This way, you save time and money on gas as well.
3. Check your local newspaper for coupons. These are worth taking the time to collect, especially if your local grocery store doubles coupons.
4. Don't be afraid to try the lesser expensive store brands. These almost always come with a money-back guarantee. You will most likely be pleasantly surprised and sometimes you might even prefer the generic over the more expensive name-brand item.
5. Avoid purchasing pre-packaged foods unless you find them seriously discounted. Not only do they taste like the cardboard they are packaged in, but they typically are expensive.
6. Most of us enjoy chicken, fish, and meat products, but they are quite expensive. You might consider buying smaller quantities of these items and preparing them in a soup, stew, rice, or pasta dish. Soups and stews can be very inexpensive to prepare, but still give you the benefits of being filling and nutritious. There are limitless recipes you can prepare using pasta or rice for a fraction of what you would pay for a frozen entree. You can also check your meat department for items that are discounted because they are nearing their expiration date. As long as you can use the items right away or prepare meals and freeze them for later, then there is no harm.
7. Get together with a friend or two when you do your shopping. The goal is to purchase larger bulk items that are less expensive and share the cost. This works particularly well with basic staple items. It also works well with buy one get
