Every time I hugged you harder
You felt my hands around your throat
Afraid to let you slip through my fingers
But you saw only a closed fist
And of all those caring smiles
You saw merely the flash of teeth
Instead of comfort and warmth
Malice and menace bled through
Affection was never my strong suit
Scarred your heart with my spade
Who knew the intended caress
Only felt like duress
A fine line runs between
Your heart and mine
Between I do and I won't
Between loving and smothering
