Mosh pits belong in the nineties, and personally, I think they should stay there. How can you possibly savour the experience of seeing a band you supposedly like, if your constantly trying to keep yourelf from harm?
One of my first mosh-pit experiences was in my hometown, a country town, and it was a pathetic 'mosh' really, but I was reckless enough to try this stage-diving caper out (I was about 15; It was some since-expired Aussie punk band I think...One Inch Punch?) Anyway, I got all ready to jump into a 'sea' of twenty or so people and...shock-horror...I fell straight onto my shoulder on the wooden floor as the mosh-sea had parted! So I had a cry, but Bianca was there to help me out (thanks, mate!)
Fast-forward to the 1999 Big Day Out. Korn. Soulfly. Mosh-heaven! My strategy for Soulfly was to keep my eyes on Max, stand behind a big, friendly meat-axe, as I was a scrawny 17-year-old, and enjoy the metal-fuelled ride! THAT was the scariest mosh I've been privy to. Korn was the biggest mosh I've ever seen, easily. I was so into the music I eventually gave up on 'moshing' and found some room to dance in my own way. And I guess thats when I gave up on moshing altogether.
I'll end with a quote from Australian hip-hop outfit, Butterfingers: "Females, do your belt up/Cause in the mosh pit girls get felt up."
