Video game reviews: Dance Dance Revolution (DDR)

Wow. That's all I have to say about this game.

For those who have never see it, or played it, you're missing out. The game is addicting, both to play and watch. Here it is in a nutshell: The game is full of songs (mostly Japanese techno and pop, but some popular American songs as well) and each song has steps that go along with it. You play on a dance pad using your feet. When the game prompts you to, you either step on the top, bottom, left or right arrow in combinations that turn into a dance...if you do it right. It sounds basic and boring, but it's a lot of fun.

Now, each song has different difficult skill levels for beginners, intermediate, and advanced players. There are even marathon modes for people who get very good at the dances. In addition to the normal game mode, there is a workout mode for people looking to use DDR to get in better shape.

It is possible to play at home, you just have to buy a dance pad to plug into your game console. Dance pads come in different styles and and many different prices (depending on the quality of the pad you would like.)

Currently, there are many different versions of the game. There is the original game, then DDR2, DDR Extreme, DDR Supernova, and others. As soon as you get bored of the songs in one game, you can buy the next. If you want to spice up the game, you can get an eyetoy to add in hand movements and so you can watch yourself on the TV screen. You can also do a dance mode in the new Karaoke Revolution games where you dance and sing at the same time.

Back to the gameplay, it is hard to pick up at first, but (as long as you have a sense of rhythm) you can get better quickly with a bit of practice. Don't give up if you aren't successful right away! Make sure to take breaks as the game can get rather tiring on more difficult skill levels.

I highly recommend any of the DDR games. They are fun, addicting, and a good workout. It is fun for people of all ages, boys and girls. Try it!
