A disaster has struck and now you are left cleaning up the damage that was caused. It can be overwhelming; your home that was once a safe haven and held so many fond memories is now in total disarray. You may be at a loss as to where to start.
The first thing you must do is to begin assessing the damage done to your home. If you are not able to return due to extensive damage then you must immediately begin temporary repairs. Take pictures of the damage caused by the disaster. You will need to provide this to your insurance company.
Make sure there are no gas leaks occurring in your home. It's safer to have utility personnel assess this as soon as possible. When it is safe to go inside your home make sure all appliances are turned off and unplugged from wall outlets.
Begin the boarding up process. This is very important and must be done as soon as safely possible. You do not want further damage done to your home and belongings. Look for any damage done to your roof and make necessary repairs to insure rain does not do further damage. You can do this with plywood or plastic sheeting that is secured properly. Be sure to board up all windows to prevent damage from weather and any vandalism that might occur.
It is necessary to minimize the damage as much as possible by securing and boarding up your home after a disaster has struck. Your home and belongings can be repaired or replaced. You may be surprised at how much can be salvaged and repaired if you act quickly in the aftermath of a disaster.
Focus on the positive. Your family is safe and you have taken those first initial steps of recovery. Remember that sometimes we are knocked down in order to learn how to get back up.
