Satire: Science fiction

Geneva, Switzerland
10 September 2008

Today French President and current President of the European Council, Nicolas Sarkozy switched on the world's largest and most expensive scientific experiment. The giant facility on the French-Swiss border is officially named the European Organization for Nuclear Research, but is commonly referred to by its French acronym CERN. Though they enjoyed significant financial and technical support from the European Union and the United States, the hopes of the scientists involved on this huge particle accelerator were quickly dashed when the Pandora's box of high-energy physics was opened.

For almost a decade, construction on the Large Hadron Collider has been plagued by delays in funding and problems with its thousands of electronic parts. The twenty-seven kilometer circular facility was built miles underground and stands more than thirteen stories tall. Containing more than five-thousand separate magnets weighing over two-thousand tons each, the massive Collider promised to unlock the key to understand the formation matter. It was also hoped by many creationist-scientist involved in the project to provide proof of the Big Bang Theory. This theory is an attempt to harmonize scientific theory with a Biblical understanding that an omnipotent God created the universe. With one Word, God created the earth; with one switch, forces have been placed in motion by humans which promise to undo that "creation."

For physicists like the Polish-born Marek Bzdury, a vocal opponent of the CERN Collider projects who testified in the 2005 lawsuit against the United States government in attempts to block funding for the CERN project, the non-zero probability was not the "fantastically small chance" that the proponents of the project insisted. Saying that the science was not sufficient enough to proceed, Bzdury's prescient warnings were ignored.

"The CERN leadership was warned that there was a non-zero probability that the collider would create a black hole. Now we know that those warnings were correct." Bzdury went on to add, "What we have is a collision of folly with unlimited power. And the result is the beginning of the end for all of us."

The first readings from the advanced electronic sensors confirmed the worst fears of the naysayers in the scientific community. As soon as President Sarkozy turned on the Large Hadron Collider, sensors indicate that a mini black hole was created under ground near Geneva's airport. Though currently the mass-eating space has only demonstrably consumed a portion of the billions of particles which exist in the super-cold environment of the Collider, what cannot be predicted is how quickly or how much the mini black hole will grow.

"One thing is certain," Bzdury added, "now that CERN has created this mini-monster, it must continue to feed it (by operating the Collider) or the electric field which is now acting as an incubator for the black hole."
