There are good reasons for boarding up after a disaster. When an event takes place that has damaged your home and property try to step back, away from the emotions of the moment, and estimate what the damage is and work our a way to prevent it from getting worse. boarding your home as soon as possible give you peace of mind, possibly prevent further damage from natures fury, from human destruction through looting and general vandalism, and allow for the insurance company to see the results of the natural disaster.
A natural disaster has no target, it moves through whatever is in it's path.. The damage can be structural to the home or building, and it will often damage or destroy furnishings and personal property in the home. As soon as possible you need to make sure the home is secure. A natural disaster, such as an earthquake can have damaging after-shocks. Storms can return or come in waives. Floods can last for a long time. All of these are good reasons for boarding up the home or buildings as soon as possible.
Boarding up the home gives you added time to sort through the property and salvage all that can be salvaged. There are safety issues as well. By securing the home you will be also stabilizing the structure to some degree.
You will have peace of mind if you know that your property is secure. In the midst of the emotions caused from personal and financial loss, knowing that you have some protection from further loss will make it easier for you to make the important decisions that follow. Many of those decisions can be effected by your emotional state of mind.
While you are boarding it all up you may not see that it is worth the effort, however when you look back you will be very thankful that you made that effort.
