Cell phone use should be banned while driving and there should be a stricter law prohibiting it. Driving and talking on the phone can be just as fatal as drinking and driving. It should be taken more seriously because valid evidence shows engaging in this careless behavior can lead to innocent lives being lost.
According to a study done on June 26, 2006 by the University of Utah psychologists, people who drove while conversing on there cell phones, were just as impaired as drivers who were mildly drunk. The minimum limit of 0.08 is the lowest level of intoxication. According to The World Health Organization (WHO), the number people killed in car accidents continue to increase. Approximately 1.2 million people die each year because of this. Despite all the latest technology, by the year 2020 The World Health Organization expects this number to increase by 65%. Distracted drivers are the number one cause of car accidents. When a person does not keep his eyes on the road or decides to fix something in the car while driving, they risk taking an innocent life or lives. It's not worth it. What ever it is, it can wait until the car is off.
Driving requires a person's undivided attention. My mom use to tell me, "You have to have eyes on the back of your head". In the blink of an eye something can happen. Situations take place in a split second sometimes and a person has to be ready to take the appropriate action. When a person is on the phone I've seen it a million times, they either sit at a "green light" too long, fail to signal, go through a "red light" or drive too fast. They do not take into consideration what they are doing. This is largely because half there attention is on driving and the other half is on there conversation. I've seen people laughing so hard on the phone that they made turns too fast. They didn't look both ways. Children nearly were killed because of this. It's not a joke. A car is considered a deadly weapon when utilized incorrectly.
When a person drives they are putting them self and others at risk for an accident even if they don't talk on the phone. Unseen obstacles can always come in the way such as inclement weather or icy roads. That is why there is no choice. Phones use must be banned. There is no argument. What if a child runs out into the street and a person is going too fast to put on the breaks? What if someone in front of the person suddenly stops? These are just some of the things to anticipate while driving. A person has to pay attention to every detail. They have to look at the rear view mirror every few seconds. They have to pay attention to the people crossing. While that car is on, driving should be the one and only priority.
Overall, talking on a cell phone and driving do not mix. It is better to wait until you have finished driving to speak on the phone. Doing this could save your life and someone else's.
