Hair/thread tourniquet syndrome: Protecting your baby subtle circulation dangers

never advanced to this stage. Though Hair/Thread tourniquet Syndrome is not very common you should still take preventative measures to reduce the chance of your baby developing it.

Thoroughly inspect your baby's appendages each time you bathe or change their clothing or diaper.

Shake out blankets and bedding often and inspect them for hairs or stray threads.

Inspect all garments used to cover your baby's appendages. This includes socks, shoes, diapers, underwear, mittens, gloves and the feet of baby's one-piece pajamas.

Watch for signs and symptoms of Hair/Thread Tourniquet Syndrome including behavioral changes and swelling or discoloration of the appendages.

If you suspect there is a hair or thread wrapped around the appendage and can't remove it yourself, take your baby to their pediatrician or the hospital right away; the quicker the object is removed the better chance the appendage will return to normal and have no permanent scaring or injury.

In the event the appendage has already turned purple or black take your baby to the hospital with haste. This is a seriously advanced stage of Hair/Thread Tourniquet Syndrome and medical attention is the only chance of saving the appendage.

Even if you are successful in removing the hair or thread, have it looked at by a medical professional to rule out and internal injury.

I don't know what the odds are of a baby falling victim to this condition more than once, but little Ethan did, in spite of all my diligence. Of course I recognized the signs and symptoms and figured out what had happened early on.
