Poetry: Lessons in life

by Patricia Parker

Created on: August 30, 2008

I've learned you can't be skinny
If you come from padded genes.
I also know you can survive
The losing of your dreams.

I've learned that age and aging
Are not compared as one
And maturing doesn't have to mean
The ending of your fun.

I've learned that being funny
Is an asset to be proud
While being terribly quiet
Is as bad as being loud.

I've learned that sleep is needed
But too much isn't good
And while eating's a necessity
Eat only what you should.

I've learned the rain will always end
And flowers always bloom
I've learned a group always make
Space in a crowded room.

I've learned that wanting to forgive
Is easier said than done
But letting go of hurtful thoughts
Is a battle bravely won.

I've learned that life is just a gift
And one we all must treasure.
I've learned its nicer to be kind
And give each other pleasure.

I've learned a smile can change a life
And brighten someone's day.
I know that this is something
That I strive for every day.
