Miles stretch between us
Highways like outstretched arms
Like cars racing back and forth
My thoughts constantly return to you

Instead of providing a buffer
The distance seems to magnify the feelings
Longing bleeds into sorrow
Love only breeds pain

I envy the phone you cradle
For its proximity to your lips
And because unlike me
It is warmed by your breath

Don't tell me your feelings are fading

And that memories aren't the same
Because whenever I close my eyes
You are there, fresher than ever

Your voice still sends a shiver down my spine
And your sighs shatter my heart
I can't remember why I thought
I could handle this time apart

But to you I'm just a disembodied voice
A book you've grown bored with
So you hang up and put me back on the shelf
And your heart moves on to someone new

I wish I had the same luxury
But I'm stuck wondering from afar
My thoughts darker than the dusk
Without your smile to brighten my day

You said you would be true
So I pinned my hopes to you
Only to find in doing so I pierced
My soul and it tore in two

Though we stare at the same sky
Our hearts are worlds away
And suddenly the distance between us
Seems so much farther

Despite the warmth of the city
I still shiver to my core
Knowing the love we once shared
Is no more
