Commentary: Proud to be an American

relentless cadence marches on, "We're proud to be sending our only son to fight in defense of our great nation!" What a waste of human life. Not one U.S. soldier has fought to defend the nation since the British were defeated and subsequently sent home in humiliation more than two centuries ago. Because a military force has never attacked U.S. soil since then, except for Pearl Harbor which was provoked and easily preventable, defending the nation is such a mindless and farcical precedence that there is no reason to attempt to convince otherwise. Are we really proud to be a nation whose most bountiful export and contribution to the world is armed aggression and violence? Shameful to be an American, sounds more accurate.

In spite of obliterating the civilian population of Iraq and its infrastructure, while simultaneously creating a surge in organized terrorism around the world, the only sense of pride that might be felt is if the players who conducted the farcical propaganda for war are eventually held accountable for their actions at the International Court of Justice. Then, after the criminals are sentenced to a minimum of life behind bars in solitary confinement for violating treaties like the Geneva Convention, our nation can implement a new governmental strategy that is truly based on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all, not simply the ultra-wealthy silver-spooned.

Somebody slap me out of this absurd daydream, please. We all know that the likelihood of these thugs being brought to justice for crimes against humanity, like so many of their predecessors, is about as probable as them coming clean on their deception. In my defense, it doesn't cost to let the imagination run wild.

To wrap up this rant, try to keep in mind something that this writer has brought up in other post America is not a country, Nation (kudos Colbert). America is a continental system that roughly a billion people call home, and who are therefore just as American as anyone who comes from the United States. While that might be a bitter pill to swallow after so many years of tradition, maybe a blessing for the entire human population is in order before rhetorically babbling "God Bless America", and moving on to the next item in this thread.

Let us trust that this wasn't too much to stomach, as taking an honest look in the mirror can be quite depressing. End of commentary.
