Fleece jackets are a relatively new fashion phenomenon. They have been used for over twenty years by outdoorsmen and hunters. But fashionable fleece has evolved in just the last 10 years. With the invention of reliable polyester fleece fabric (from Malden Mills, the leader in fleeces), designers are comfortable creating garments for the general publics. These new fleeces are easy to wear and care for.
When buying a fleece jacket, decide the purpose of the coat. Is it for rugged outdoor activities? Will it be worn daily at school or work? Or is it a casual weekend jacket? This is very important. The heavier the coat needs to be, the more you need to think about fit. If it will be worn daily, you must consider washing possibilities.
The trendy fleece jackets are cut to fit the closest. You will find them everywhere from souvenir gift shops to high-end boutiques. These come in the latest colors and cuts; they make me look the slimmest. I really like mine, but they are rather thin; I wear mine like a sweater. These generally wash surprisingly well in the washer and dryer on delicate. Price has no bearing on wear. My cheapest ($25) jacket looks terrific a year later, with weekly winter washings.
The more mature pea coat or zip jacket fits more body types well. It comes in heavier fabric and will hold its shape throughout a winter of daily wear. Sometimes they are lined, which helps hold the construction. They may require dry cleaning. I would buy one only after trying it on, and from a reputable company. These coats are much more expensive and should be worth what you pay. Check to be sure.
Finally, there are the fleeces for the hikers and hunters. They are built the best, are most expensive, and are in the fewest colors. Usually they come in primary colors, a few forest shades, and camouflage. They have lining to wind-blocking ability. These garments are classically cut and will wear for years. Try the fleece on carefully and be sure you love it-you will be owning it for a very long time. Again, I would definitely try it on before you buy. These fleeces have more seams to construct the coat properly. Check the seams to be sure they are tight.
Fleece coats are a handy winter staple. They are lightweight, warm, and easy to wash. The lined ones block the wind very well. Following a few guidelines will insure you are buying a fleece that will serve you well.
