The storm has hit. It's the aftermath of a disaster. When a home is hit with one or more of acts of nature such as severe weather or even a hurricane damage is naturally going to occur. Natural disasters cause stress on the home itself and in one's life. Making repairs in order to prevent further damage to the home should be the focal point in the aftermath of a disaster. Here are five preventative measures to take after a disaster occurs:
Remove any storm debris clearing away the debris such as glass from broken windows is helpful. This ensures everyone will be able to move about freely around the property without getting injured.
Assess the damage that occurred look at the structure, write down which windows are broken, see if there is any mud or subsidence, look for water damage and flooding. Look for leaks and seeps on driveways, foundations and sidewalks.
Manage the power. The power problem may be temporary or long term. If long term, make sure all the wires in the house are unplugged. This measure prevents short-circuiting and fires from occurring. If the problem is temporary, depending on the where the residence is located the utility company might try to resolve the problem.
Boarding up the residence by applying a large "X" in tape over your windows or board up with plywood is a necessity to prevent further damage from occurring. Remember to clear glass from already damage windows before boarding.
Operating in the aftermath is difficult. Decide what you can do first and what can wait. Engage your insurance company if you have insurance. Make sure you open a claim or get one started. Talk to a claims adjuster your policy might cover debris removal, water damage and power failure depending on the way your policy is written.
You can weather the storm by taking preventative steps. It's overwhelming at times and gut wrenching to see your home in such a state. But as you can see preventative measures take a RAMBO style approach. The approach is severe but so are acts of nature at times.
Preventative measures like removing debris, assessing the damage and boarding up the property will give you a sense that your home not suffer further damage, will save you money and peace of mind.
