So what money is saved when you go camping? For one thing, when you aren't home, you aren't using as much power. There isn't a need for the air conditioner, lights, power for cooking, power for TV and computers, and so forth. This can amount to quite a savings in even just a couple days. Water is also not being used, and this can be a huge savings especially in drier areas where water costs are high.

Some of the cost of gasoline for making the trip may also be offset by going camping, because it isn't uncommon for people at home to make repeated trips to the store or to the mall. Out in camp, there is usually far less of the 'running around', so the expense is in getting there.

If you regularly rent or go to movies or dine out, this is a saved expense when camping, since neither is needed, and usually they aren't desired. Nature provides the entertainment.

Naturally, some people would prefer to go out camping with special extras, just to make the trip that much more rewarding. There is nothing wrong with that. But we need to understand that these are not necessary extras for the camping, and so the additional cost can't be really be counted as relating directly to the camping trip.

We might ask, 'Can camping cost more than staying at home?' and the answer would be absolutely, it can. However, for those people trying hard to save a buck, camping doesn't need to cost more than staying at home. You need not give up the joy of going camping because of the expense of getting out and away.
