Essays: What makes a good leader

Ben Franklin once concurred with this notion when he stated that "well done is better than well said." Indeed, one group of successful leaders takes this message to heart. These leaders are the role models whose actions are enough to inspire imitation even if their leadership is fully unintentional. Be it words, actions or some combination of the two, inspiration is essential to good leadership.

But although this ability to inspire may be a telling trait of a true leader, it is by no means the universal and singular criterion. A good leader also has a unique selflessness of purpose that distinguishes him from all the rest. There is no room for self-interest in leadership. Good leaders don't lead for personal prestige or wealth. They lead instead to help their common man; the only reward they seek is the intrinsic satisfaction of knowing that they have improved someone else's existence. And while many good leaders may be compensated with extrinsic rewards, this must never become the driving motivation.

In closing, let me reiterate that good leaders aren't just elected officials or famous generals or even the most successful captains of industry. And good leadership isn't common to any group of people, whether they are formal leaders or not. True leaders are simply the catalysts of positive change, the protectors of positive principles. In truth, choosing or electing leaders democratically is largely unnecessary; great leaders are naturally distinguished by their selfless commitment and their tremendous ability to inspire others.
