Writing for the Love of Writing
Writing can be a hobby, a career, and even a passion. For me, it started out quite simple. I had a little journal that I would scribble my silly poems or daily thoughts on life in. As I grew older it became an outlet for my innermost emotions. Whether I was sad, angry or happy, I wrote. It was a way to clear my head. Looking back, those early words almost seem silly now. The daily drama that caused such disarray in my teen years, now remind me how simplistic life was back then. What I would give to have a life that simple now. Yet if my childhood emotions would not have aroused such turmoil, I doubt my daily anecdotes would have given me such enjoyment.
As the years past the words became less about me and more about writing. I wrote because I needed to. I needed to share my hopes and my dreams with this little book that refused to judge me, but simply listened.
There were days were the thoughts and the stories swarmed in my head like a tornado, causing me to lose focus on daily tasks. Fortunately I discovered that writing my stories, regardless of how mindless, senseless or inconceivable these stories were, writing them down gave me the clarity needed to function in the manner we classify as "normal."
Now, the more time I spend writing, the greater my passion becomes. Perhaps it is now an obsession. An obsession that offers me rewards instead of deficiencies. It's become my therapy and at times even my conscience. You can always take back what you have said, what you have promised, but what you have written is almost as if you have carved it in stone. It is a pledge, a promise. Yes words you can take back, but the written word is eternal. As you write, there is no audience, no judgment. There is just you and your words. Nothing is more honest.
Like many, I write with the dream that someday my words will cause an emotional rollercoaster of epic proportion. Not with the hope of winning a Pulitzer, but with the dream of bringing a tear to ones eye or even a smile to ones face. The dream of invoking the curiosity in a child, or bringing clarity to an adult, with the simple art of writing. For the love of sharing my innermost fears, hopes and even prayers, I write. Praying that my words may inspire someone to live better, love deeper or reach farther than they ever dared before.
This is why I love to write. There are few things in this world that are as powerful and yet as simple as the written word. So grasp it with all you have and write it will all you own. For nothing in life is as true to whom you are as your written word.
