Insider's guide to the real San Antonio: Riverwalk and the downtown area

Paseo Del Rio, The River Walk, follows the curves and contours of the San Antonio River as it winds through downtown San Antonio. The river sits below street level, lined with arbors of palm, cottonwood, cypress and willow trees which provide shade for the numerous cafes, shops, galleries, boutiques, bakeries, restaurants, hotels and local watering holes. Visitors enjoy a unique view of the river by relaxing on a river cruise. Cruises serving breakfast, lunch and dinner can also be arranged.

Throughout the year, The River Walk provides a hub of activities for locals and visitors. Every January, the river is drained and cleaned prompting the River Walk Mud Festival, including the Mud Pie Ball complete with a king and queen. February brings the River Walk Mardi Gras celebration with music, parades and beads. March along The River Walk turns a little green in honor of St. Patrick's Day. A River Parade and pub crawl ensue, featuring pipers and drummers.

The River Walk provides an ideal location for many local artists to showcase their work. The River Walk Arts and Crafts Fair, held twice a year, highlights jewelry design, oil paintings, watercolors, sculpture and crafts. One of the most magical times on the River Walk occurs at the Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony, the day after Thanksgiving. Thousands of tiny lights illuminate the river as river floats with carolers pass by. The Christmas tree glows with holiday spirit, and Santa makes a special appearance.

A few restaurants to step into along the River Walk include, Bigas on the Banks featuring fine dining with Texas accents. It's nice, but a bit pricey. Acenar offers inside and outside dining, showcasing authentic Mexican food with new flavors and style. For different taste, try Paesano's, which extends Mediterranean-Italian cuisine. They have several locations throughout the San Antonio area. To quench your thirst try Zen Bar or the local martini bar, Swig.

Just steps from the River Walk, sits the historic Alamo. Originally a Spanish mission, later it became a fort as the Texans fought the Mexicans for independence. The heavy doors still bear bullet holes from the epic battle. It's a must see on any San Antonio visit.

For a peek at true Mexican heritage and culture, visit Market Square the largest Mexican mercado outside of Mexico. The mercado packs the area with arts and crafts, jewelry, produce, and other foods. Several artists produce work on the spot for a special or unique gift. A local favorite is Aztec Mexican Imports, featuring authentic Talavera pottery, Guayabera shirts and Mexican dresses. For a bite to eat, head to Mi Tierra. The restaurant never closes its doors, open 24-hours daily. It features strolling Mariachi musicians for entrainment, and a bakery that will satisfy your sweet tooth. In December, Market Square celebrates the holidays with piata parties, blessings of animals and a visit from Pancho Claus.
