Insider's guide to the real San Antonio: Riverwalk and the downtown area

When referring to our nation's cultural configuration over the decades, some call it a "melting pot." Although San Antonio is a cultural mecca, it is NOT a melting pot. Indeed, San Antonio has managed to celebrate each culture separately, maintaining the integrity of celebratory rituals, ethnic cuisine, and religious heritage, and their unique individuality. It is a lesson in cultural and historical preservation and respect. The Institute of Texan Cultures, located near the River Walk, is a testament to the wealth of knowledge and experience that make Texas great. One would be remiss not visiting this facility, located in Hemisfair plaza and managed by the University of Texas at San Antonio.

The Riverwalk itself, and all of its surrounding environs are a living testimony to the dedication the city has to preserving its heritage. As a native of San Antonio, I'm often asked by would be tourists where to go when they visit; they know I won't merely suggest they go to Fiesta Texas, or Sea World. Here's my standard list of "must sees", all of which are either right on the Riverwalk itself, or in the surrounding area:

El Mercado: The legendary "marketing strategy" of artisans in Old Mexico can be witnessed in Market Square. Rows and rows of jewelry, clothing, food, and other wares are resplendent. And, prepare to bargain, just like they do in tradition Mexican markets.

La Mansion Hotel: Spanish architecture and Old World charm are the hallmarks of this hotel. The original structure was built in 1852 as a Catholic school. After a day of "Remembering the Alamo", located nearby, strolling through the halls of the initial structure would be a continuation of your historical trek. The school was converted into a hotel in 1968, just in time for the opening of the World's Fair.

Mi Tierra: Mi Tierra Ristorante' is iconic in stature. Years ago, as a college student, Mi Tierra's came as a welcome "intervention" after a night of partying and overindulgence. Mexican food works wonders for a hangover, and the sound of traditional mariachis is soothing to a head swimming in an overabundance of alcohol. Open twenty-four hours a day, Mi Tierra's is a "must see", and is the only one of its kind.

La Villita Square: La Villita was the original "San Antonio", and was home to some of the Mexican soldiers stationed at the Alamo. In the 19th century, European immigrants from France and Germany settled in the area. La Villita is one square block and is home to a plethora of cultural artisans.
