Labour day is a day set aside for the hard-working citizens of North America to enjoy one last weekend with their children before the upcoming school year. Labour day is also about celebrating the prosperity of work, and to relax and avoid work at all costs. Of course, since some (or many) businesses are open, restaurants, corner stores, campgrounds and the like are also all open, and people have to work there. However, the major thing that defines what not to do during the labour day weekend is work. Go out, have fun. Order food from a delivery place, or fire up the barbecue or campfire (preferable), but stay out of the kitchen as much as possible. Of the many things not to do on the labour day weekend, the following are the most obvious;
* Take it easy. The lawn can be cut next week. The outdoors are calling. Do anything that make you relax, as long as it is not work related.
* Don't go back-to-school shopping. There is plenty of time before the weekend to get all your school supplies purchased.
* Do not not go fishing! Of course, this means to go fishing. The same can be said for camping, boating for the last warm-weather weekend of tolerable lake water temperatures, hiking and just driving around the countryside, looking for fun things to do, for free.
* Even if they offer you time-and-a-half, do not go into work.
* Do not bring any work home with you, whether important or not. Tell you boss that it is labour day and you have plans (even if those plans include a couch and the complete South Park DVD series, or any other movie or t.v. show marathon).
* Do not wear white. This is an old superstition, but it really holds true, the colour just does not blend with the beginning of the fall season, as the labour day weekend is the beginning of the end of summer.
* Do not drink and drive. The parties will be rocking, and drinks flowing freely. The person who gets behind the wheel while intoxicated deserves to be caught by the police, and suffer the worst consequences!
* Do not go to any work-related functions, like parties or picnics. Work is the last thing to think about on labour day weekend. No, work is the one thing that labour day is not about!
* Do not be a slave to your children (age sensitive). Unless you have family plans, let the kids go out and play all weekend with their friends.
* Do not bring any work-related Blackberries or any other instant contact gadgets that are provided by your company.
Following this advice, and using common sense in that you must try your hardest to avoid work at all costs, you should be able to enjoy the labour day weekend as it is meant to be enjoyed; with friends, loved ones and the great outdoors!.
