would have gotten off of the ground.
That's precisely why I would never consider starting a business. I like my four weeks of vacation and ten paid holidays way too much. Often, the only way a small business owner can get a week off is to shut things down; however, more often than not, it's a matter of working one's fingers to the bone 24/7/365. Throw in an occasional sick call and the fact that somebody else is doing all of my accounting work free gratis, and it's easy to see why starting a business isn't everybody's cup of tea. Instead, it's even more of a reason to salute anyone with the intestinal fortitude to venture into the business world.
All of these "cons" are attributable to a successful business. Now it's time to consider the fact that most businesses go belly up in a matter of months. What is a prospective business owner going to market these days that Wal-Mart can't sell for less? Given people's fascination with fast food and chain restaurants, it's no wonder that mom and pop eateries close their doors everyday. Want to do a service instead of selling goods? Well, the Orkin and Roto-Rooter men are well known and far easier to find in the phone book. For those (like myself) who aren't the poster children for the Go-Getters Club, my advice is to remain joined at the hip with the day job. Nothing is more gratifying with fulfilling Horatio Alger's dreams, but the risks and lack of rewards are enough to scare off the majority of people.
