A little game of cat and mouse can add some excitement to the courting process. Playing hard to get presents the pursuer with a challenge they either readily accept or respectfully decline. Those not willing to put a little effort into winning your affection probably aren't worth your time anyway. The key is knowing how to play. There's a fine line between playing hard to get and playing head games.
When someone is attracted to you it is usually as obvious as the nose on your face. If the feeling is mutual, let him know, but be sure to go about it subtly. Offer a quick glance in his direction, then look away as if occupied with something else. When engaged in conversation, look interested, but don't over do it. Refrain from fawning all over him, hanging on his every word, and giggling like a giddy school girl after everything he says. Keep your composure, even if you really do feel like that school girl.
Be the one to initiate the end of a conversation. When speaking, you need to be the one to have the last word, and walk away. Hanging around until he decides to wrap things up will make you look too eager. Asserting your confidence by walking away will make you more intriguing. He will become enticed by the thrill of the chase.
Don't give up your phone number too easily. When he asks, tell him you're very careful about giving out your home number. Write down an email address or cell number where he can reach you or leave a message. He will definitely step up his game in pursuit of that coveted home number.
Never, under any circumstances accept a last minute date. When Prince Charming calls to invite you out that evening, you must not accept, even if your only plans were to sit in your pyjamas, with zit cream on your face, eating ice cream. Tell him you're sorry, but you've already got plans. Suggest an alternate evening to get together. Now he knows you're not available at his leisure and your setting of the alternate date puts control in your hands.
No matter how well a date goes, never call him the following day. This implies okay you got me. You may spend the entire day staring at the phone, waiting for it to ring and checking to make sure it works, but he's probably doing the same thing. Wait for him to make contact.
On a first date, bid him goodnight at the door and go inside. Avoid inviting him in for even a cup of coffee, no matter how badly you want to. Walking through your front door is a privilege that must be earned. This makes you more appealing as he is consumed with trying to get his foot in the door.
Eventually you need to wave the white flag and surrender. Playing hard to get for too long can cause him to think you're impossible to catch. Without the presence of the cat, the mouse has no game to play and soon gets very lonely.
