What is self-management of chronic illness?

by Sarah Snyder

Created on: August 27, 2008

Let's face it, being sick is never fun. Unfortunately for people suffering from a chronic illness, this reality is one that never goes away. Whether suffering from diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, or arthritis, the key to maintaining your quality of life lies in the way you choose to manage your condition. Although sometimes it can feel as though your illness has control over your life, it is important to understand that you do have control. Self-management of chronic illness is not only possible, it is an important part of your treatment.

Fortunately, there has never been a better time than right now to learn how to manage your illness and in many cases, it is easier than you might think. In many situations, improving your health can be as simple as changing your eating habits. For instance, in people with different types of inflammatory conditions such as acne or arthritis, studies have shown that eating foods with a low glycemic index may actually help to reduce the inflammation in your body and thus decrease the occurrence of your symptoms. This same nutritional principle can be applied to people suffering from a wide range of chronic conditions from diabetes to poly cystic ovarian syndrome.

Another helpful wellness remedy comes in the form of relaxation. We have all probably heard by now about the benefits of yoga and meditation. For anyone suffering from a painful condition, this is an especially important point. According to the Flow Yoga Center in Washington DC, studies have demonstrated that practicing yoga asanas (postures), meditation or a combination of the two, reduced pain for people with conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune diseases and hypertension as well as arthritis, back and neck pain and other chronic conditions.

If you were to ask Dr. Harvey Gilbert, exercise is one of the most important aspects to managing a chronic illness. Not only does exercise increase strength and self confidence, it can actually improve your immune system and increase organ function, while decreasing the side effects of certain medications, all important considerations for people who want to manage their own chronic conditions.

While there are multiple ways to effectively manage a chronic disease from nutrition, to meditation, to exercise, it is a reality that these are merely ways to alleviate some of the symptoms of illness rather than eradicating the condition altogether. It does take some patience and research, but a small investment of time produces a great reward for people who have been diagnosed with a chronic condition. Although not a cure, learning to effectively manage symptoms serves as an empowering tool for people struggling to regain a sense of control over disease, while improving their quality of life.
