US elections 2008: Democratic Party Convention (DNC) speech by Hillary Clinton

Hillary's speech was a total sell-out. In a dramatic and emotional highlight of the Democratic Convention in Denver, the very disappointed Hillary Clinton went to the podium and gave a rousing call for support for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. When she declared herself "a proud supporter of Barack Obama," the words must have left a bitter taste in her mouth.

After a tough primary battle, when she ran neck and neck with her opponent to the very end, it must have taken a lot of internal courage for Hillary to go to the convention podium. She had to cast personal feelings aside, put on a big forced smile and beg for party unity.

Dressed in her signature pants suit, this one a glowingly bright pumpkin color, the total lack of sincerity in her attitude was more than evident. Hillary's words, carefully scripted by Democratic party writers, and her proud, in-your-face intensity, were brave, but totally unbelievable.

However, many people among Democratic ranks believe it was probably much more heavy party pressure than personal courage that forced Hillary to grin and bear the knockout count of her presidential ambitions. It is difficult to believe that the first woman in American history to have a real chance to win the White House this year would meekly cave in and go along with the overly emotional Democratic wave of Obama worship.

The darker side of the presidential picture is that Hillary and Bill Clinton certainly have some very hard feelings about the way she and her millions of Democratic supporters were swept aside by the Barack Obama political machine. It is very doubtful that the proud and ambitious Hillary's party loyalty is so strong that she would willingly stand aside and let the inexperienced former Chicago social worker and junior Senator take the spotlight away from her. Further, the cavalier way her chances for the vice presidency were dismissed by the Obama camp must have added even more grating anger to her resentment.

Barack Obama desperately needs the millions of disappointed Hillary's former supporters to have any chance to win the presidency from Republican opponent John McCain. The Hillary advocates are still in a state of shock about the way their candidate was cast aside like a used pants suit. As the campaign heats up during its remaining ten weeks until Election Day, we'll be sure to find out whether Hillary, along with a very resentful former President Bill Clinton, will throw her full support behind the young man from Illinois who dashed her political hopes.
