Motivating employees: Is money or recognition more appreciated?
The most important and very vital problem of any organization is motivating employees towards their objective or goal in an organization. When we consider the question whether money or recognition is more appreciated in motivating the employees, we should know the real difference between the two. While money has its real value in terms of dollar or rupee, the recognition is not. Suppose, the head of an office or the proprietor of a concern, appreciate that you are a good worker, it is well and good. You feel a sense of satisfaction that you have been recognized by your employer. You may even invite the jealousy or the wrath of your colleagues, due to the appreciation shown to you by your employer, even if you are really deserved it or worth your recognition. But what is the use? Will it be sufficient to motivate you? Certainly not.
People everywhere have become materialistic. They know the value of things. Mere words of appreciation of your talent will not do. It may help you to raise you from your low spirits and just cheer you up, but it is not sufficient to motivate you towards your long term or short term goals.
Take the case of young children. Simply praising them just like, you are so cute, so beautiful, you are so intelligent, you are the best etc' may be helpful to cheer up your children who are sagging in their spirits or when they remain dull. But motivating is something more than that. You just encourage your child who is a poor performer in mathematics as follows: You are my darling and if you score above 60 % in maths in the quarterly exams, you will get a hero pen along with Rs 100/-Just see the results!Your child will sure to win her hero pen along with Rs 100/-
Sunil Gavaskar, the cricket legend from India was motivated in his childhood days by his father to score as many first class centuries as possible to get Rs 100/- for each and every century that he scored. Sunil Gavaskar scored many centuries and also got many a hundred rupees from his father.
Let us consider a few famous literary awards: The Nobel prize for literature, the Booker prize and a number of UN awards, they have a citation recognizing the achievements of the award winner and also invariably accompanied by a prize money. The idea of conferring the award along with the prize money is that mere recognition will not do to motivate the award winners to achieve further in their life in their area of specialization.
