There are several movies that come to mind when I think about some movies I consider best.
Jennifer Jones and Joseph Cotton were perfectly cast for "Duel In the Sun" and "Portrait of Jenny". Of course, without Gregory Peck in "Duel in the Sun" the movie would have had no story. These are two of the best with these stars.
Lute and Pearl in "Duel in the Sun" had a very traumatic love affair. They loved each other but knew it would never go anywhere. Joseph Cotton, Lute's brother, wanted to change Pearl into a lady and Lute wanted her to be only his. It didn't work either way and Pearl and Lute ended up in the mountains shooting and killing each other. They died in each other's arms.
"Portrat of Jenny" is a sweet love story. Jenny is just an image from the past and Joseph Cotton is a poor artist trying to earn a meal and pay his rent when he meets her. She darts in and out of his life, telling him bits and pieces of herself. He follows up and finds that Jenny died in a tidal wave as did he almost later. He paints a portrait of Jenny which was his mark of fame as it was hanging in the art museum at the end of the movie.
"Duel in the Sun" and "Portrait of Jenny" are both classics and well worth watching.
Of course, "The Wizard of Oz" is certainly one of the best and everyone knows about it, but, when I first saw it, I was mesmerized when the black and white turned to color. Judy Garland was perfect for the role. There is a book out now "Wicked" which tells of the Wicked Witch of the West's life when she was younger.
"Forrest Gump" starring Tom Hanks is another best movie. It tells of how one can do things that don't mean a thing to them but to other people, they are heroes. It is funny, serious, sad and has a wonderful sound track. It shows what true friendship can be like and most of all, what true love (his love for Jenny) is. It is heartbreaking that he did so much and it meant nothing to him. Forrest cared for people and the rest, to him, was just life.
"Gone with the Wind" I have watched a dozen times and never get enough of watching Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, who I consider one of the most beautiful women who ever hit Hollywood. They are perfect for this movie which has laughs, sobs, love, murder, and the whole nine yards. It gives you an insight as to how the Southern people suffered after the Civil War and of how gracious living in the South was before the war. It also shows how tough a woman can be when put to the test.
"Imitation of Life" is sort of a soap but, it tells how bad things can happen when you try to be someone you are not. The costumes are fantastic with Lana Turner, John Gavin and Sandra Dee, not to forget Susan Kohner who is black but wants to be white and denies her wonderful black mother. Only in the end, does she realize after her mother's death, that her mother was her truest friend. It is sad. Troy Donahue has a small part in it.
"The Ten Commandments" with Charleston Heston is a movie that will turn a non-believer into a
believer. The special effects (parting of the Red Sea, etc.) makes this movie one of the absolute best. It is so realistic and scarey of what the Bible has told us.
"The Color Purple" is another best movie. Whoopie Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and the rest of the cast are beautiful. This is another sad movie in that Whoopie and Oprah are entrapped to other people and it will really rile you to watch it. Oh, but it is a wonderful and best movie.
I could go on and on forever (I feel I am leaving out some better movies but I hope someone else will mention them).
I have enjoyed writing this and I do love movies.
