San Antonio is known as the Riviera of Texas. Its spectacular assortment of shopping venues, restaurants, historical landmarks, and entertainment venues make it the perfect spot to spend a weekend getaway or a peaceful long retreat. But if you want to get a taste of the true San Antonio, these new spins on popular tourist destinations will help you enjoy San Antonio like a native.

The Riverwalk is the most popular destination in San Antonio. The charming construction of shops, restaurants and hotels along the cobblestone banks of the river sunk below street level right in downtown is currently the number one entertainment destination in the entire state of Texas. At one end of the river, the Rivercenter offers shopping and even an IMAX theatre complex, making it an essential stop on any visit to the city. But for a less touristy location, try dining at the historic Casa Rio, the first restaurant ever established along the riverwalk and a very popular location for locals to laze away and evening in luxury. Also, the riverwalk recently welcomed a new addition with the construction of "Howl at the Moon," a dueling piano bar that is packed every weekend with college students and young adults on the hunt for some fun.

The Alamo is located in downtown San Antonio and is another essential stop for a tourist. However, for a special twist on this classic historical location, be sure to visit next door at the Menger Hotel. The hotel, although not as old as the Alamo, has nearly as much history. Aside from being a perfectly beautiful historical landmark, the Menger boasts a wide arrange of haunting stories that delight both tourists and locals alike. Just go on inside and ask to speak to "the man with the stories." Soon, you'll be hearing tales that will give you a whole new view of the Alamo it surrounding areas.

Also in downtown San Antonio, the historical Majestic Theatre is home to the San Antonio symphony. Whether you're a fan of classical music or not, a trip to the Majestic is an unforgettable experience. The architecture and dcor of this landmark coupled with the soothing sounds of a first-rate symphonic performance is sure to astound every the most refined artistic mind.

Make Market Square another one of your stops on your visit to San Antonio. A bit off the beaten riverwalk path, you'll far more locals here, dining in the authentic Mexican restaurants complete with colorful outdoor dining. There is also a string of shops including a farmer's market offering everything from fine cigars, to handmade Mexican crafts. There are many working artists creating the finest in art, music, crafts, and food right there in the square. The Gallery Ortiz offers exhibits of local artist's work, so be sure to stop in for a look at what the San Antonio artistic community can do. Complete your visit of Market Square with a trip to Mi Tierra, one of the most popular restaurants in San Antonio. Enjoy not only a rich and wonderful Mexican meal, but also a spectacular treat from their famous bakery.

Veering off the beaten path is always a great idea when visiting a new city. But it's an especially good plan when visiting a city with as much character and charm as historic San Antonio.
