Sisters

We'll each get
our favorite flavor
of Ben and Jerry's.

(I'm partial to Chunky Monkey.)

Eating straight from the cartons
we'll watch
weepy, chick movies.

(The Color Purple always makes me cry.)

We'll exchange
stories from our youth.

(Wait until you hear the station wagon incident.)

We'll dissect our first loves
with an eyelash curler.

(Aren't you glad you didn't marry him?)

We'll give detailed accounts
of our weddings.

(Two bridesmaids in hideous,
beaming yellow prom dresses,
carrying wilted daisies.)

We'll play top that labor story,
not even denying how it hurt.

(And how we wanted to kill our husbands.)

We'll convince each other
we are the best mothers
and wives
the planet has ever seen.

(Really! We will.)

We'll plunge in
and see through each other's
cheese cloth veils.

We'll gain the courage
to strengthen ourselves
through one another.

We'll become more than friends.

We'll become sisters.
