Generally let it do its work. Modern computers are capable of recovering from computer hangs/freezes. Usually it hangs/freezes because in the middle of doing some task something is not right. There usually are routines written in software to handle these problems. It only takes longer than expected time. Most people, when the computer hangs, decides it is in trouble and panics. The best idea is to give it a few minutes, walk away, and check back on progress. It possibly will very soon be back on track. It after a long time it really hangs, press CTRL-ALT-DELETE together to enter the Task Manager. It shows a list of running applications which you can STOP. You can choose to stop those that is listed as non-responsive to fix the problem. Wait a while for your computer to stop the program and everything should return. If it is a total freeze and nothing can be pressed, go for the reset button. There is no myth that pressing the reset will damage the computer. If problems persist often, the best thing is to get the computer checked. It may be software conflict or a hardware problem. It could be aging. It could need service.
