A brief blunder in memory.
I saw life as it should be.
We as we should be.
Not as we were.
Don Quixote.
Reminds me of you.
Reading desperately.
As if to escape the pain
of your existence.
I lost you
while you read those pages.
Maybe even before.
Don Quixote.
"Sanity may be madness,
but the maddest of all
is to see life as it is,
and not as it should be."
Madness has entered
because awareness reigns.
So lucky is the fool
who avoids or escapes.
And so trapped am I,
facing my mistakes.
Seeing so clearly,
in such a vivid way,
that moments cannot pass
where you do not join my thoughts.
I long to rejoin "should be" times,
they comforted me so.
But the mind cannot escape
What it has learned.
Oh, to unlearn.
To hide and to avoid.
To play freely
in a land of unknowns.
If only I could unthink,
or pause consuming thoughts.
Perhaps every time I dream
of that which I wish was said unto me,
I am playing in the land of shoulds.
But if ever I am there,
even in its throws of creativity
and imaginative joys,
it is all too brief.
And I'm reminded of
coarse realities.
"Seeing life as it is"
is unwelcomed,
and also, what unfortunately sticks.
