The Heat of Africa
One day I suddenly find myself
in the heat of Africa.
This, a place I have absolutely only dreamed of
in my years of dreaming about
places I'll never see!
But this unforgettable day
I find myself here,
in their habitat. I sit and wait
silently inside the vehicle.
One of us heard giant rustling
in the thick bush,
right of the road.
We cut the engine, waiting in silence,
holding our breath.
How big must this beast of mystery be?
Twenty, thirty feet tall?
And then a trumpet joins in with
the rustling. Elephant!?
We hold breaths again, waiting
in anticipation of any noise
to confirm our suspicions.
Other than the drone of the birds
and a billion insects performing their
daily symphony.
Out somewhere,
in the heat of Africa.
