I am a proud "Mainiac" by birth, not yet one of the many famous, but maybe someday. Located in the Nothernmost as well as Easternmost corner of the United States, Maine is a very small state, part of what is commonly referred to as the New England states. Though small in size, it is home to some big names.
*My favorite author, Stephen King, not only resides in the state of Maine, but was also born there. His books take place there and the name of the the production company that produces his movies is Castle Rock Entertainment (after Castle Rock, Maine, the setting for his stories). The dark New England winters have certainly served Mr. King well as he gives us chilling entertainment for them.
*Actor Patrick Dempsey, once a teen heartthrob, now playing the more mature but still heartthrob, role of Dr. Derek Shepherd in the TV series "Grey's Anatomy" is also from Maine. Born in Lewiston, he grew up in Buckfield.
*Don McLean, most famous for his hit song "American Pie" was taking his Chevy to the levy in the fine state of Maine. He is now living a very normal life there.
*Judd Nelson, the Brat Packer who made his fame in such 80s hit movies as "St. Elmo's Fire" and "The Breakfast Club" was born and raised in Islesboro, Maine.
*Ricky Craven, born in Newburgh, has found success in the Nascar racing circuit. He was a competitor in the Winston Cup Series and continues to gain recognition at the wheel.
*Civil War heroes Joshua Lawrence Chamblain and Brig. General Adelbert Ames both resided in Maine. Chamblain also became involved in politics after the war.
*Famous African-American author, Harriet Beecher Stowe was born and raised in Brunswick, Maine.
*Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, one of America's most beloved poets famous for such works as "The Song of Hiawatha" and "The Courtship of Miles Standish", was born in Portland, Maine and got his education at Bowdoin College.
*Former President George Bush, along with has wife Barbara, has enjoyed a summer vacation home for years in the beautiful Kennebunkport, Maine, a quaint small town along the fabulous New England coastline.
These are just a few of the famous people who have come from the state of Maine. As you can see, the natural beauty and charm that is a given in New England states, has inspired the creativity and success of many. Hopefully, one day my name will move among their ranks.
