It is commonly acknowledged that you will be expected to pay an increased rate, for the same vacation package, during the peak holiday season. Undertaking a vacation outside of these peak travel periods, and thus avoiding the summer season, school and public holidays, can allow for an individual, or family group, to visit a popular destination that initially exceeded their financial limit. Travelers can note that comparing the cost of out-of-season to peak season travel can equal the potential for two vacations per year, for the same price as one.
The lower cost of flights and accommodation is a tourism ploy to attract visitors into booking a holiday during the assured periods of low custom. The use of discounted prices and special offers to derive income from a location, outside the seasons where demand is high and the tourism providers can charge a higher rate and still attract the tourists.
The primary reason for a destinations ''low season'' is the weather. The travel providers acknowledge that the weather is likely to be less favorable during this time of year, hence the demand and number of visitors decline and the providers will lower prices to reflect this trend.
Before you book a trip to a destination, search the local weather bureau and determine what weather conditions you are likely to experience. Ask yourself if you can accept this scenario, or is the necessity for a favorable outlook paramount to your travel?
A lower demand equals less crowding. A resort or attraction will be less congested, allowing for an increased freedom to explore the sights and sounds. A place of interest that normally experiences a prolonged period of queuing will be more accessible. Less visitor numbers are a preferable option for families with younger children and can prove easier and more pleasing when traveling around the local area, but it can also be disadvantageous with facilities and amenities.
Many destinations operate their opening hours according to the time of year. It is advisable to check beforehand if local attractions or on-site entertainment will be accessible during your intended visit. Will a local attraction be closed, or are the opening hours restricted? During the ''peak season'' you will find a high number of stores and vendors, like eateries and gift shops, are open for the tourist trade. As the season ends, they either close or limit their operating hours to evenings or weekends. Do you prefer a wide choice of selection, or are you prepared for the limited services?
Sunlight hours. The off-season usually corroborates with the hours of daily sunlight one can expect at a predetermined destination. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, will this restrict your ability to participate in your intended activities, or will the early fall of darkness be an acceptable ''negative'' when compared to the benefits of off-season vacationing.
Through researching the intended destination beforehand, using the available resources of resort websites and tourist bureaus, you can ensure a rewarding and memorable vacation at a fraction of the cost.
