Farewell to Summer
In early summer
Wildflowers called "Farewell to Spring"
linger, casting pink shadows
on golden hillsides,
their tissue-paper petals
fading in the brilliance of the sun.
Now, giant sunflowers bow
their noble heads in somber nods...
Or, perhaps they curtsy at the
end of a grand performance -
dazzling days, endless blue skies,
and nights of shooting stars
that spirit across
a canopy stretched over the Milky Way.
Mornings that sauntered into languid days
of colors that once vibrantly alive played
now wither at my feet, amber, bent
without even a whimper, a protest, a cry.
I am left here to ponder
September's bidding - her struggle
between heated afternoons and cool, foggy mornings,
as she surrenders, slips away,
into a quieter dusk.
