Never give up on what you love

What did you want to be when you were four years old? A nurse, a policeman or fireman, a doctor, a mommy, a cowboy, or an Indian Chief. How many of you became what you wanted to be when you were four?

I wanted to be a mommy but I also wanted to be an actress. I took acting lessons and belonged to the Drama Club in high school. I actually, auditioned for the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and was accepted. Imagine how excited I was when I was told this dream-come-true news.

My bubble burst when I told my parents and they said I was not going to New York to try to be an actress. I was going to college. I offered several colleges for them to choose from that had excellent drama schools. Nope, strike two. They were too far away. I gave up my dream and went to a large state university that nobody wanted me to go to. Least of all me. Strike three and my dream was out.

I know someone who followed her dream. My daughter-in-law. From the age of four she wanted to be a Rockette. She had started dance lessons and the teacher had been a Rockette. Sally decided that she wanted to be one. From that day on, she sought her dream.

She continued to take dance classes going from once a week to three, four, and five times a week. Her life revolved around dancing. When she graduated from high school she went to a large state university, not because she wanted to but because her parents had told her she must.

After one year, she transferred to a smaller college that had a nationally known dance program. Over the years, many Rockettes have come from that college. At the end of her first year, she auditioned for the touring company of "42nd Street" and became part of the chorus. If you have never seen "42nd Street", there is a lot of dancing. Oh, FYI, the chorus in a musical sings and dances.

After the tour was over, her parents figured she had gotten it out of her system and she would go back to school. But, Sally had tasted success. She then auditioned for a production company that supplies entertainers to cruise lines. She was accepted and became a dancer on one of Royal Caribbean's ships.

Enter my son Adam. Adam had decided several years before this that he wanted to try scuba diving. He did and loved it. But, being Adam, he took it to the next level and went to Marathon Key, Florida and became a certified scuba instructor.

Apparently, the cruise lines know when this school graduates a class and calls to ask if any of the new divers are any good. The school knows what each cruise line
