Pearl Harbor and 9/11
What BOTH accomplished:
-Each attack brought the United States into a war that the general population did not see as desirable.
-Pearl Harbor brought the USA into World War II, a war that many Americans believed belonged in Europe and was not their concern. In fact, many immigrants from Germany and Italy still had nationalistic ties to their motherlands, and were against the war on less of an isolationist policy and more of a nationalistic one. The government, however wanted to get involved in the war and was giving the Allies financial aide before the attacks came under place.
-9/11 brought the USA into armed conflict in the Middle East (because Congress has not officially declared war)which many American's, pre-9/11 did not even consider doing. The government, however has been looking for ways to invade the Middle East, even before the current Bush administration. Lobbyists of the PNAC (Project for a New American Century) had been in Washington pushing fiscal support of the opponents of Saddam Hussein since 1997.
-The government did not take precaution, or use information uncovered, to prevent these attacks.
-Before Pearl Harbor the Roosevelt administration was warned multiple times about an impending attack by the Japanese. Yet, on December 7th a fleet of Navy ships was caught by the Japanese "surprise attack". Also, in 1940 the fleet was ordered to head to Hawaii, within Japanese range. On top of this many of the Japanese's codes were cracked well before the attack. So the government not only knew that the attack was coming, but allowed it to happen.
-Before 9/11 the Bush administration was warned multiple times by the CIA, and Clinton's administration that terrorism was going to be an important issue. Mrs. Rice was specifically told this, and the New York Times reported on it on December 30, 2001. The CIA repeatedly was in contact with the administration warning them about underfunding, faulty hardware, and some suspicious activity involving flight schools, . In particular, the arrest of Zacharias Moussaoui, a flight school student, was a good warning. Zach apparently had no desire to learn how to take off or land a plane, and according to the arresting officer he seemed like "The type of person who could fly something into the World Trade Center." Seems a little bit telling to me.
How They Differ:
Who Died:
-In Pearl Harbor naval soldiers died.
-In the 9/11 attacks civilians died.
Morality
-While some may argue that the Holocaust did not take place, it still can be said that Hitler's violent and tyrannical reign was oppressive to Europe as a whole. Even if he was supposedly a good leader the fact of the matter is that he was a conquerer, and conquerers are seldom satisfied with what they have. Getting into World War Two, while unpopular actually did help to protect the spirit of freedom and democracy.
-The 9/11 attacks were used to get the American public to go to war with an enemy that could have been kept in check without full scale invasions, and eventually as a stepping stone into Iraq. The world was not at war with the Middle East, but the administration felt they aught to be. So they let the attacks happen. They ignored the obvious, and caused the death of many civilians.
