Pirate lovers worldwide were finally fulfilled of the long-awaited want to possess their very own copy of "Dead Man's Chest." One question that may naturally arise once a sequel is released is whether it compares to its predecessor. Was "Dead Man's Chest" comparable to "The Curse of the Black Pearl?"
Let's begin by analyzing the acting. Overall, the characters are well portrayed in both movies. Jack Sparrow seem equally as comical, if not more-so, in the second film. Elizabeth's personality is brought out a bit more in the second movie; her skill at sword fighting is highlighted when she disguises herself as a man to find Will Turner, her lover. Will Turner is played exactly the same in both movies. Orlando Bloom seems to almost overact a tad bit, he almost seems uncomfortable. It is unclear whether that's simply the personality of Will Turner, or just melodrama. If the value of the movies were solely based on acting, "Dead Man's Chest," would probably take the lead.
The special effects in the first movie are vivid and breathtaking. The skeletal crew under a full moon amazes and even frightens the viewer. The second is disgusting as far as the effects portrayed. They are extremely well created, the crew of The Flying Dutchman are all some form of sea creature. They are very lifelike, and are definitely more present and detailed than those in the first movie. "Dead Man's Chest" is probably the better choice for viewing as far as special effects are concerned.
The plots are both as believable as piracy can get. There is a great deal of humor in the films, which is what attracts many viewers. "The Curse of the Black Pearl" outlines the journey of Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) to reclaim his ship called the "Black Pearl" due to its black sails. There is much suspense, action, and romance, which is enough to attract a wide range of viewers. In "Dead Man's Chest," Jack Sparrow has a debt to settle with Davy Jones, a deformed pirate with the head of an octopus. he is said to control the sea, and his crew is damned to 100 years of service with him before the judgment of the Lord. This film seems to have much suspense, yet also seems to drag on a considerable amount.
While viewing the first film, most say that it is more enjoyable to sit down and watch numerous times than the second. However, the second has more humor and romantic twists, which often makes it more worthwhile to watch the monotony of some of the longer scenes. Many of the questions left with viewers from the first are answered in the second. Both films definitely have their strengths and weaknesses. If one were asked to choose the better film, it would be extremely difficult. Both are worthwhile, especially to first time viewers.
