Reflections: Living in the city

by Renee Morgan

Created on: August 25, 2008

City life is busy, busy, and busy!

Crime has become so bad in the city that the good things of a city are hard to find. I lived in the "Concrete Jungle" for over 30 years. Big cities were the place to live, until gangs and drugs became rampant.

When I was younger, I loved the big city. As a teen, there were the malls, block parties, and good old public transportation. As large as Cleveland, Ohio is there was always a local bus or train to get you anywhere you needed to be, one, maybe two buses and you are there. You never had to put miles on you car unless you just wanted to, like going to church.

On warm summer night, you could come home from the night shift or a night at the club and find a few of your neighbors sitting on their front pouch. There will be old Mrs. Jones sitting at her window, waiting for you so she can pass you a plate of something she had leftover. In addition, big Mama is waiting to make sure you know that your babysitter had that little ugly boy at your house two days ago.

I use to love to hear three or four of the guys get out on a street corner and sing. I grew to love the museums and theaters'. I never attended an event at the Coliseum but it was I sight to see when it was full. To know that a 30 minutes bus or cab ride could get you to the gate of the Budweiser Track, or you can go see the Undertaker live. There is always going to be some nightclub, somewhere, open most of the night, every night.

There are a variety of everything, stores, restaurants, malls, people and men. I love to be able to choose which store I will shop at, without going 50 miles or more. If I run out of an ingredient, while cooking, I pop into one of the corner stores and buy what I need. For the nights, that I do not want to cook I can eat at McDonalds Monday night, Pizza Hut Tuesday night, Chinese Wednesday night, Soul Food Kitchen Thursday night, and the Red Lobsters Friday night.

Cities have multi-cultures people everywhere. These different cultures form communities inside of a community. You can find people of many kinds of backgrounds that are willing to talk and show you their way of life. Moreover, there men everywhere, all kinds, shapes and colors.

I think the best part of the city is the holidays. This is when you can find people at their best or their worst, but for the most part, they are at their best. The Christmas decorations are so beautiful with all the festivities going on at every turn. You can see Santa and his sledge on one corner and his elves hiding out on the other corner. In addition, it just is not New Years without being there, in the city, with the old crew bringing in the new!

Bright lights and big living, that is what city living is.
