DEAD LUCKY

"All gotta go sometime,"
me Mam used to say.
(And she went 'bout a year ago
Just about to the day.)

And one day, I will cark it.
No question of that.
I'll end up in a box,
and you'll wear a hat.

I will be downing a pint
and find myself downed.
Wander off fishing
and end up all drowned.

I'll walk under a bus.
(If one ever turns up.)
Or slip on some doggy do
left by a pup.

I will grow old and shaggy
and smell of my wees.
Or I'll get hit by lightning
that should have hit trees.

Cancer or heart disease?
None of us knows.
Knowing my luck
I'll trip over me toes.

If I get a few seconds,
I'll look over me life
Think "What was that all about?"
And "Did I do right?"

I'll rue some time wasted
The places not seen.
The things that I should have said.
And the times I was mean.

So before I cark it
For cark it I will
I'd just like to say this,
as my share of the bill.

"You've always been gentle,
you've always been kind.
Thought nowt but the best of me,
time after time.

"And if I live to a hundred.
Or a hundred and two.
I'll just never get over
the sheer wonder of you."
