How to prepare a child for high school.
The first step of many in preparing a child for high school is to begin by teaching them the basics of socialization at a very early age. When a child is old enough to understand what the word "respect' means that child is already to learn how to apply that concept to actual situations. Respect is the first behavior children should learn before attending any school and at any age.
The second step in preparing a child for high school is developing a positive and open relationship with the child you are preparing. Honest and open communication does not mean a life without laws or the evasion of consequences of breaking any rules, laws, or regulations. Communication between the parent and student is essential to the development of characteristics and habits that will enhance a child's educational and social experiences during the tumultuous teen years.
Third on list of preparatory steps is the act of becoming a role model for the new high school student. Teens do need role models. Teenagers are typically at the stage of their lives where they are tuned in with the facade that adults attempt to put over on them with the old,"do as I say and not as I do," routines. This will certainly lead them astray from what is expected of them by their parents, teachers, and employers. When I was a teenager, I never fell for that either.
Fourthly, ask your child what his or her interests are. Have them tested by their school counselors to find their hidden talents or special abilities. Do they want to attend college or apply for a military academy? Would they rather train for a future in a vocational school?
The beginning of the high school years are crucial to setting up a child's schedule that apply to his or her interests and future plans.
The fifth step would involve parents or guardians to become participants in school activities and open houses. Children tend to want to become more involved in school when they know that other family members really care enough about their education to spend time, effort, and money to improve the lives of students.
Finally, the last step in preparing the potential high school student for his or her first day of study. Parents should provide all of the necessary accouterments for study like pencils, pens, and paper. Children, especially those who have reached high school age, need decent shoes and clothes to help them feel socially accepted by their peers. Clothes and foot gear need not be expensive, just acceptable in appearance to the teachers, schools, and peers of high school students.
Teenage years are a difficult and confusing time for any child to go through. Parents must take steps to help their children learn about the wrongs of bullying and the rights of abstaining from alcohol and drugs while in school. Good role modeling by parents and teachers can make the learning social mores or rights and wrongs in society much easier.
