Back to school: Preparing your child for first grade

their ABC's and numbers, as well.

Two to three weeks before the onset of the new school term you should receive a list of expected school supplies from your child's new teacher. Many schools post the lists from their school in large super center department stores so you might check there if you did not receive one in the mail. This is also the time you will want to begin purchasing needed clothing and shoes for your child to begin the new school term. Although the expense of these items is taxing on the household budget, it is very important you do not convey any negative feelings regarding these purchases to your child.

Most children immensely enjoy seeing all their new school supplies. It is a positive way to reinforce the idea of how wonderful it is to go to school if you take the child with you when you go shopping to purchase the needed supplies and wearing apparrel. It is far better to take the necessary shopping excursions early of the morning before your child grows tired and with ample time prior to the beginning of the new school year. If you wait until the last minute you will find the aisles you need to shop in overly crowded. By shopping a bit early and shopping earlier in the day you avoid both a cranky child and a cranky parent.

Allow your child to choose the color and style of the backpack they will be carrying to school if at all possible. You will want to avoid purchasing the cute vinyl and plastic backpacks as they are cheaply constructed and will not last the school term but it is good to give the child a sense of feeling he or she is maturing. Therefore, steer the child in the direction of the section of backpacks you think are suitable for purchase and allow the child to choose from among those.

Parents know best when it comes to buying suitable clothing for their children but you can allow the child to choose from among two or three colors in the same style of shirt or pairs of shorts and pants you like. The same can be done in the shoe department. This is great for building a child's self esteem and for making the child look forward to entering school knowing they will be wearing clothing and shoes they picked out. To the child's mind they chose the articles of clothing and shoes without any assistance and may proudly boast, "I picked it out all by myself!" Do not forget to purchase new undergarments and socks for your child as most have grown considerably during summer break and it will be time for replacement of those items as well.
