"Mr. Blue Bird's on my shoulder, it's the truth, it's actual, everything is statisfactual." 'Zip-a-dee-doo-dah', a Disney original, has been a favorite song for years.
This song took on new meaning for me a couple of years ago. I would sit out in my mother's garden for hours on end, just enjoying the sunshine, the perfume of the flowers, and the songs of the birds who would flit between the many feeders and sparkling bird baths. One bird in particular caught my interest, as he was there every day and you could not miss his vivid hues, no matter where he settled himself. I watched this beautiful bird, Mr. Blue Jay actually, with interest. He did not disappoint, as there was never a dull moment with him. He would hop around, bouncing to some music that my ears couldn't distinguish, and then suddenly dart at another bird, who would chase him back as if they were playing a game of childhood tag.
One day, he flitted out of sight due to one of his games, and just as he slipped from my mind, I felt as sudden rush of wind beside my ear. I felt a few strands of my hair pull free and saw the blue jay lift high into the sky, holding my hair in his beak as a trophy. Apparently, he had decided that I was to join in his daily games of tag.
