Poetry: Corruption

by Lowell Mertz

Created on: August 25, 2008

In Congress you'll find there are those of a mind
to make laws which restrict what you do.
At the dawn's early light they've been straining all night
to arrange an exception or two.
There's a conjugal thrill when they broker a bill
benefitting their corporate friends,
while our jobs sail away to the Bay of Biscay
they await their increased dividends.

Now, while this would enthrall those in Tammany Hall
who arranged a few deals of their own
even they'd be dismayed at the way they've betrayed
those two border guards jailed and alone.
And tomorrow you see maybe you, maybe me
could be in a foul circumstance framed
Dear Congress would sit without caring one whit
little dolls that the Texan has tamed.
