The Murder
Shelia looks out the window, seeing Jed's car drive up. It is a busy time inside the small cafe. She knows why Jed is really here. She is more than happy to see him. Jed walks in, as the bell rings as he takes off his hat. Shelia has already wiped off the counter stool he sits at every time he arrives. He sits. It is a little noisy perhaps, plenty of folks tonight, but normal looking, a usual crowd.
Before Jed picks up a menu, Shelia pours him coffee and brings him ice tea, sweet of course. "Good to see you, how's your day been?" she asked. "I am fine. Katie is working on the problem as we speak. She is into overtime, and I have assigned a deputy to assist her tonight. We will find this guy, don't worry." He means it. Shelia knows it, and she smiles.
"Poor thing," Shelia tells Jed. He raises his eyebrows," Who is the poor thing?" She answers, "Why Katie of course. Working all night long, because of what is going around here." Jed looks back at his menu and remarks, "Katie is fine. Gives her time to do something, other than paint her nails. Besides, I left one of the deputies with her. You should feel sorry for him, if anyone. He has worked hard all day, now he has to sit in front of the computer with Katie." Shelia smiles. She knows he is tired and striking an argument with him at any time, is not what she would like to do. She thinks Jed works hard and does his best. He will make the right descions on this case; everything will work out in the end. She sees his worried lines on his face and changes the subject.
She suggest the dressing tonight, it is still fresh. "That sounds wonderful," he says. Because it does to him, since he has not eaten since this morning. Shelia disappears, busily, waiting tables with Olivia and tending personally to Jed's dinner. She wants it to be special for him.
Jed eats the plate full of chicken and dressing and follows it up with the banana pudding, with meringue, just the way he likes it. Shelia knows it too. She thinks she would do anything for that man. Olivia had been watched out the windows all day long but now, she is too busy to think of the flower delivery or the slimy character who thinks who loves her and "will get her." Olivia is content to stay busy, too busy to do any thinking about the creep. It seems her staying busy has been the best medicine for her problem; otherwise, she probably would not leave her house. She likes Shelia and appreciates the opportunity to keep busy.
