This past June as a brilliant sun was setting against a scenic background of crystalline surf and endless palm trees, I married the love of my life on a gorgeous beach in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Every year Jamaica is inundated by young couples eloping to this island paradise to recite the vows of marriage. However, what made my marriage somewhat unique, is the fact that at 60 years of age, I too, had the wonderful opportunity to enjoy the beauty and benefits of this experience. And why not?
Life is ours to enjoy, and men should never limit the opportunities available to them because of their age. I was well over 50 years old when dating really became a priority with me. I was basically tired of working all day and coming home to an empty nest at night. The quality of my life had to change drastically and my emphasis centered on dating.
Unfortunately, as we grow older we are confronted with changes. The challenges of dating in your senior years is no exception. There are obstacles we face now, that were non existent in our younger dating years. In order to succeed in the senior dating game, we must refine our personal skills to increase our chances of success.
The primary goal related to successful dating is to make yourself avaiable. Did you ever read the lost and found column of your newspaper? Think of yourself as lost and wanting to be found. Be your own public relations person in this situation by promoting yourself to friends and relatives. I met my wife through a friends former fiance, because through conversations I politely intimated my availability and interest in dating. Your age doesn't matter.
The advent of online dating for seniors is also a viable option for meeting others. One of the most well known and legitimate websites is eharmony.com among hundreds of others. There are also countless discussion boards, personals, and forums where people can become friends and discuss topics that interest them.
Another popular place to meet others is on a singles cruise. It is a stress free environment and everyone shares a common goal...to meet other singles.
If your not shy initiate a singles party at your home. This is a great matchmaking technique. Here you can invite people and ask them to bring along their single friends. Everyone can benefit from meeting new people and quite possibly potential dates.
Dating services are still used by many singles to meet potential mates. This usually involves a short video presentation of a potential date explaining their interests and what they are looking for. It usually involves a fee, but gives you an in depth look at the personality and appearance of potential matches.
Don't stay lost any longer, get yourself found. There is an island paradise awaiting you and that special someone; but like every exciting journey, you have to take the first step.
