Road Trip Ideas for Seniors.
There are unlimited possibilities when deciding on a destination for your senior road trip. However, it is the journey, not the destination, which usually results in the best memories (and pictures). This is the time to take advantage of your new found adult status and take one of the most memorable and All- American road trips.
It is perhaps the most famous "route" in America, that's right Route 66. This is the perfect road trip for those who are interested in retro Americana, and love kitsch. Road side attractions and natural wonders abound but, be prepared for a long tripyou are literally driving across the country.
The journey begins in Chicago, a metropolis filled with famous museums and an infamous past. The city presents unlimited options no matter what your interest. Take some time to explore the lakefront, take pictures in Millennium Park, home of the now famous "Bean". If you plan ahead and do some research, you can find free days at any of the world renowned museum. There is also a hostel located right in the heart of downtown, if you just want to get some rest before you start.
After your departure from Chicago, you will pass through seemingly endless fields of corn before you reach St. Louis. The St. Louis Arch is the gateway to the westand the perfect place for a photo-op. Further down the line in Stanton, Missouri, you can stop and see the old hideout of Jesse James.
Then it is on to Kansas and Oklahoma, the real heart of rural America, and experience that everyone should have, real rural America. As soon as you enter Texas, you will notice the saying rings true; everything is bigger. Make sure to look out for the Cadillac Ranch on the way to Amarillo, yet another roadside attraction along your way.
By now you should have noticed the change in the geology and topography. One of the first great examples is Palo Dura Canyon, which officially welcomes you to the Southwestern United States.
At this point in your trip you probably have the A/C blasting but don't let the heat rush you through New Mexico and Arizona, take your time and stop at the various state and national parks along the way. An obvious must seethe Grand Canyon.
Crossing the California state line marks the last leg in your journey. Route 66 leads you through Beverly Hills on Santa Monica Boulevard and eventually to the Pacific Ocean. In a small park at the end of Route 66, along the ocean, there is a small plaque that commemorates the famous road at the Will Rodgers Highway.
The first sight of the Pacific Ocean has a profound effect on some people, soak it in and enjoy the sand under your toes. After you take it all in, put on a bathing suit and kick back, you have arrived.
