The Dark
Darkness quickens nervous stride,
Lurking dread the shadows hide,
Danger pressing from every side,
And tiny cries the chill wind rides!
Eyes dart in a swift uneasy quest,
Rising fear excites heaving chest,
Ears strain at imagination's behest,
As self control terror seeks to wrest!
Heartbeat escalates at every second,
Smell of horror mounting is fecund,
A panicked, all out dash is reckoned,
As reserves of strength are beckoned!
Light ahead becomes mercy's lifeline,
Hope wells as form becomes defined,
Grasping peril fades, becomes sublime,
Heart slows to a warming of the spine!
Destination's warm glow banishes fear,
Wonder replaces horror on arrival there,
Imaginary monsters suddenly disappear,
Such alarm's vanity becomes quite clear!
Within the mind a tiny voice has said,
Niggling in a whine of keening dread,
"Enjoy the comfort thus nicely spread,
The dark awaits when home you head!"
